Alter Guild

History of the Altar Guild

In 1900, the Flower Mission of the church was established. In the session minutes throughout the years, the Flower Mission is mentioned.

This organization provided flowers for the pulpit each Sabbath and after the services, flowers were delivered to homes throughout the Village where there was sickness or sorrow. This organization also decorated the sanctuary for Easter and Christmas.

Before the church was remodeled in 1947, there was no altar in the chancel. The organ was located with the present altar stands. In 1947, space was partitioned off to form what is now the Session Room and the Altar Guild Room. It was in 1948 that the Altar Guild Room was established, given in memory of Margaret and Richard Keys by their daughters, Mrs. John Dunlap, Mrs. Robert Galbraith, and Mrs. Caldwell Sherrill.

For many years, during the summer months, fresh flowers were supplied from the gardens of Altar Guild members.

The Altar Guild continues the tradition that has taken place for many years. It supplies flowers in the chancel each Sunday. It also provides seasonal flowers at Easter and Christmas. Each Sunday, the flowers are given to those who are ill or have sorrow in their lives, or who are celebrating a happy occasion.

In addition to the flowers for Sunday worship, the Altar Guild members act as Communion stewards when we celebrate the Lord's Supper, and they are responsible for changing the paraments on the lectern as the church seasons change.

Music Ministries

Mission Statement
To serve Christ and make Him known through music in worship.

First Presbyterian Church maintains s distinguished history and tradition of musical excellence in worship. The music program is rooted in a classical tradition that includes music from the early Renaissance era that speaks of our Christian heritage to music of the 21st century. A vital part of the church's life, the music at First Presbyterian has aided the church in growth and effectiveness in the Glendale community. We continually strive to extend and nurture our music program, based on sound theology that opens our hearts and minds to the glory of God.

Anthem Memorials and Commissions:
Through the offering of music, this is a wonderful way to recognize individuals or groups who have made a difference or impact in our lives. If you would like to dedicate an anthem honoring or memorializing a person or persons please contact the church office. Each dedication anthem allows the choir to add another piece of music to its repertoire, enriching the lives of singers and the congregation's worship. Your gift of $60 will be greatly appreciated by the choir. If you are interested in learning more information on Anthem Commissions you may contact the Director of Music Ministries, Kate Gardin.

Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir is the adult choir that sings at the 10:30 a.m. worship service each Sunday and presents special programs with organ, chamber orchestra, and other instrumentation throughout the year. The choir welcomes and invites you to join us weekly in our efforts and dedication to praise God through music. We maintain a stress-free and relaxed environment, enjoying a time of fellowship while preparing music at the highest possible level. The Chancel Choir is a rewarding experience, encouraging spiritual and musical growth. Rehearsal time is Thursday 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. September – May. Sunday morning rehearsal time is 9:45 a.m. New members are always welcome!

The office of Deacon is described in the scriptures as one of sympathy and service. It is our desire to serve the Lord and His church by helping to meet the needs of the people in our congregation and community.

As we experience God's story together, we respond as individuals and in community. Christ calls us to love our neighbor. In our giving and in our actions, we support the mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A), the Presbytery of Cincinnati, and a number of local organizations.
