The Word

The Word

At First Presbyterian Church of Glendale, Scripture is at the heart of our life together.

The Bible, the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired record of God's revelation to humanity. By the work of the Holy Spirit, it is the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ, the living Word of God and Lord of all things.

In the pages of the Bible we meet the God of Israel, who created all things, called a people to be His own, and revealed Himself in Jesus as the Savior of the world. We read the Bible not merely as an ancient text but as God's Word, through which God still speaks to us today. We read it together, guided by the church's historic creeds and confessions.

In the Reformed tradition, the Word read and preached is always joined to the Sacraments: Baptism and the Lord's Supper, also called Communion. The Sacraments are visible signs of God's grace. Together, Word and Sacrament shape us as the people of God. Learn more about the Sacraments.

The Book of Order, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s guide to worship and church life, puts it this way:

"In Christian worship, Jesus Christ is truly present and active among us, by the power of the Holy Spirit, through the gifts of Word and Sacrament.

Through these means of grace, God imparts and sustains our faith, orders our common life, and transforms the world."
